Introducing the Manufacturing Maritime Industrial Association, now searching for an Executive Director

We’re excited to announce the creation of the Manufacturing Maritime Industrial Association (MMIA), a new coalition founded as a result of the efforts and recommendations of the Mayor’s Industrial and Maritime Strategy Advisory Council

In 2019, the City of Seattle convened this council to chart a blueprint for the future of Seattle’s industrial lands, with a strong emphasis on providing equitable access to high-quality, family-wage jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities. The council brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including businesses, labor, residents from neighboring communities, and industry groups across the city’s key industrial areas: Ballard, Interbay, SODO/Stadium District, and Georgetown/South Park.

What is the contribution of Seattle’s industrial lands?

Seattle’s Greater Duwamish MIC and Ballard Interbay Northend MIC represent 12% of the city’s total land area and are vital hubs for manufacturing, logistics, and maritime activity. These industries support approximately 100,000 jobs, or about 15% of the city's total employment, providing pathways to stable careers and competitive wages—many of which are accessible without a traditional four-year college degree. These industries are also an economic engine for Seattle, fostering a diverse and growing economy that continues to evolve in response to regional, national, and global challenges.

Now hiring an inaugural Executive Director
To kick off the work of the MMIA, the search for its first executive director has begun. The Executive Director will play a key role in shaping the development of the organization, working in close partnership with the Board of Directors to establish the MMIA’s strategic direction, core programs, and operations. The executive director will be responsible for driving the MMIA’s mission forward, forging relationships across industries, and advocating for the needs of Seattle’s industrial sectors at every level of government. As the founding leader of the organization, the Executive Director will help shape its long-term vision and ensure its continued success, building a strong foundation for the MMIA to serve as a powerful coalition and advocate for Seattle’s maritime, manufacturing, and logistics industries. Deadline to apply is Dec. 1, 11:59pm.

Mission

The MMIA acts as a coordinated voice for the maritime, manufacturing, and logistics sectors, addressing emergent issues and providing the strategic direction needed to help these industries thrive in a rapidly changing economic landscape. Through collaboration, research, and advocacy, the MMIA will support the needs of these industries while championing policies and initiatives that drive long-term growth and stability.

Vision

We envision a Seattle where regional maritime, manufacturing, and industrial industries are not only thriving, but are also supported by sustainable investments, robust public and private partnerships, and a strong, diverse workforce. By fostering these critical industries, the MMIA aims to help Seattle remain a global leader in innovation, trade, and manufacturing.

Purpose

The MMIA is designed to bring together stakeholders from Seattle’s maritime, industrial, and manufacturing sectors to prioritize, research, advocate, implement, protect, and grow industrial sector jobs and needs in the city. By uniting businesses, organizations, and government agencies, we will ensure Seattle’s industrial base remains strong and resilient, supporting the jobs that power our local economy and communities.

Focus

The MMIA will focus on a range of initiatives to support Seattle’s industrial sectors, including conducting market research to understand trends and challenges, and engaging in advocacy and policy efforts to promote favorable policies at all levels of government. The organization will provide organizational support and business technical assistance to strengthen local maritime, manufacturing, and logistics operations. It will also prioritize workforce development by creating training and retention programs, and advocate for improved transportation policies to ensure efficient movement of goods. Additionally, the MMIA will track and influence relevant legislation, while gathering input through surveys and focus groups to better inform decision-making and policies.

Sectors

The MMIA represents a diverse range of sectors across Seattle’s industrial landscape, including manufacturing (from advanced technology to traditional production), maritime (port operations, shipping, and maritime services), and industrial sectors such as construction, heavy equipment, and energy. We also serve logistics and warehousing, which are vital for efficient goods movement, and focus on workforce development through programs to recruit, train, and retain skilled workers. The MMIA advocates for economic development policies that support business growth, as well as craft breweries and cannabis sectors, which are integral to Seattle's evolving industrial fabric.

Looking Ahead

As we embark on this new chapter, the MMIA will continue to work closely with our members and stakeholders to identify the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing Seattle’s maritime, manufacturing, and logistics industries. By focusing on research, policy advocacy, and workforce development, we’re committed to ensuring these sectors continue to thrive for generations to come.

Stay tuned for more updates on our initiatives and how you can get involved in shaping the future of Seattle’s industrial economy!
